The threat of an asteroid hitting earth is a real and growing danger, according to Scottish scientists.
Dr Axel Hagermann and Dr Alastair Tait, from Stirling University, have said there is a potential that an asteroid strike could cause tens of thousands of deaths – or even the extinction of humanity.
The scientists, who will speak at the Big Bang festival of arts in Wigtown next weekend, are working with colleagues around the world to devise ways of diverting or destroying any incoming space rocks.
Dr Hagermann believes the only way to stop an asteroid attack could be to fire a nuclear warhead into one.
If it was spotted early enough, a satellite could be flown up to it in an attempt to divert it away from earth.
