Caity Baser has already played Glastonbury and Wembley Stadium this summer, and over the weekend it was TRNSMT‘s turn to experience her infectious pop energy.
We caught up with the Brighton-based singer-songwriter after her set on the festival’s King Tut’s Stage.
How was your set?
It was great fun! It was amazing. I love performing and I love Glasgow and Scotland in general. Everyone’s always up for a laugh and good time. I love it here. I came on tour at the start of the year and it was one of my favourite shows.
How much do you enjoy playing festivals?
This is all I’ve wanted to do, forever, so the fact I get to go out and do it is insane and I get to go to places I’ve never been before, play some festivals I’ve never heard of. I love it.
How excited are you to be moving from a rising star to really establishing yourself?
I do feel like I’m establishing myself. I’m still up and coming obviously, the whole world does not know who Caity Baser is and I will not stop until it does! I’m loving the journey in all its beauty and terrifying-ness and I’m having a nice time. All I can do is just keep having fun. Until someone says shut up!
You looked like you were having so much fun up there on stage.
I’m a bit under the weather today but when I got out I was like, let’s f****** go. When there’s lots of people in front of me I have this burning feeling inside to impress everybody. Even if I’m feeling like s*** no-one will know. I never stop.
How pleased were you with the reaction to your mixtape Still Learning, which came out in January?
I was so pleased. I think I’ve learned to not listen to what anybody else says. Some people hate me and some people love me but some people hate Taylor Swift and she’s the biggest artist in the world. I’ve learned to not pay attention. One of the most important things is to love yourself.
It’s a great moment for girls in pop right now, do you take inspiration from that?
I just love music and seeing anyone, especially women, kill it. It makes me so happy. It’s so inspiring. Chappell Roan I love, she wears costumes, she’s so camp, doesn’t care what anybody says. Same with Sabrina Carpenter, she’s like ‘I’m the hottest girl’ and I love it, she’s the best.
It seems like you’re all supportive of each other also?
Yeah because there’s been so long where nobody’s supported us. We’ve still got a long way to go but I feel like now more than ever girls are in. It’s cool. Of course we’re going to support each other. I love love. I love feeling warm, feeling supported.
You’ve been compared to Lily Allen, how does that feel?
I love that, she’s an icon, full stop. It’s amazing.
Who else do you find as inspirations?
Freddie Mercury, Elton John, Dolly Parton. Artists, in my opinion, need to be extravagant and ridiculous. The more people that hate you, that’s when you’re doing something right! Oh she’s too loud, she wears this… shut up!
Freddie and Elton came out in big bird costumes and feathers, that’s so exciting. Even Katy Perry, I used to go to her shows and look at her and my brain would explode because she just looked incredible.
