Marvel has made movies and TV shows about all its top-tier characters and is now having to delve a bit deeper into their catalogue for heroes to milk.
While we’re not at the level of an action romp about Hellcow (a dairy cattle who’s also a vampire), Moon Knight is certainly not in the same league as Thor or The Incredible Hulk.
He is the earthly avatar of Egyptian god Khonshu, who dons a white cape and some burial tomb bandages to knock seven shades of Set out of baddies.
Complicating matters are Moon Knight’s alter egos; he has a confusing dissociative identity disorder meaning at times he’s a meek businessman, bruising mercenary or wisecracking cabbie. Oscar Isaac plays Steven Grant, one of Moon Knight’s personalities, a man more suited to a Netflix romcom than punching demons in the kidneys.
The first two episodes are light on superhero shenanigans and instead focus on Steven’s tenuous grip on his failing life; playfully, the show cuts away when his other personalities take control and skips to him waking up surrounded by clobbered enemies.
Isaac’s accent is a bit wobbly but his bumbling charm carries Moon Knight, as does the presence of Ethan Hawke’s softly spoken cult leader.
Both were having fun, and so did I. Let’s see how Grant works out his Mummy issues.
