Mashing together three ingredients in an unlikely trio can be a risky affair in cooking, as the guests at my (pre-lockdown, of course) dinner party found out when I served up an orange and mint souffle.
I thought the camembert would really pull things together but “like brushing your teeth with a tramp’s foot” was one scathing review.
Some combinations just work, though. Disney’s streaming channel appears to be branching out into experimental territory with WandaVision.
Two side characters from the Avengers movies, Wanda Maximoff (aka Scarlet Witch) and Vision have been given a spin-off series of their own. WandaVision is, unlike the Marvel movies, anything but safe.
At first glance it is a black-and-white ’50s sitcom in the vein of Bewitched.
A prim husband and wife duo, picket fences and comical misunderstandings make up the first episode, yet the light farce and archaic gags are underscored with an unsettling undercurrent more akin to David Lynch.
Imagine merging Blue Velvet, I Love Lucy and a Captain America movie and you’re almost there.
With only a few episodes of the first series streaming it’s a bit early to tell if these disparate ingredients will meld into a delicious combination. But kudos to Disney for boldly attempting to magic up a new recipe.
