Most of us work to live, but junior doctor Adam lives to work.
In fact he’s so intent on reaching the top that he’ll do back-to-back shifts on nothing but coffee if that’s what the boss asks of him.
Based on the best-selling memoir of former doctor Adam Kay, this funny drama takes a peek behind the scenes in the labour and gynaecological ward. In the first episode, we seen Adam (Ben Whishaw) trying to balance the demands of work with his busy social life, and failing miserably.
We see him abandoning his mate’s stag do to take on a double-shift at the maternity unit where he ends up delivering a baby at 25 weeks after sending what he believed to be a hypochondriac pregnant mum home earlier in the day, diagnosing the spots on her tongue as “tastebuds”.
We see him struggle to recover from his mistake and become over-vigilant in a bid to avoid another one. The usually sharp-witted Adam retreats inside himself. From fraught relationships to clashes with colleagues, and a medical complaint lodged against him, we wonder if his initial sense of self-importance has got the better of him.
Despite hiding behind a cushion at the bloody scenes in theatre, this show has me in stitches (sorry).
There is some top acting from the protagonists and you can bet your scrubs I’ll be tuning back in to see how life for Adam works out.
