DONALD TRUMP has defended his derogatory description of African countries, according to reports.
The US President has privately denied that the alleged remark was racist, instead claiming it was a “straightforward assessment” of the living conditions in the countries discussed, according to a US news agency source.
The source added that the President was not apologetic, but instead blamed the media for distorting his meaning, and believed he was just saying what many people thought. The President was quoted as using the crude remark while complaining about the US attracting immigrants in a private meeting with lawmakers in the Oval Office last Thursday.
He was referring specifically to Haiti, El Salvador and some African nations.
Criticism following the comments was swift, with lawmakers, world leaders and other figures accusing him of racism.
Trump defended himself publicly and appeared to deny the comments in a tweet posted on Friday morning.
