Location
Just opposite the Barrowland Ballroom, so an ideal choice for a pre-gig meal.
First Impressions
Unassuming from the outside but once inside you step into a bourbon and barbecue lovers paradise. The vibe is casual and laid-back, with lots of interesting band merchandise on the walls inspired by the legendary venue across the road.
Service
Quick, attentive and very friendly. Our server was chatty but not overbearing. We couldn’t fault it.
Menu
Given Van Winkle specialises in American barbecue the menu boasts everything you might expect – chicken tenders, chicken and waffles, an assortment of burgers, loaded fries, wings and mac ‘n’ cheese. It also has an extensive bourbon menu plus cocktails.
Taste
My partner enjoyed his huge bacon cheeseburger served with fries and said it tasted delicious. I chose the Tex-Mex tacos served on soft, thick tortillas with crispy chicken in barbecue sauce, peppers, onions and salsa.
The chicken was lovely and tender but the sauce was a bit too sweet for my taste. For us, the star of the show was the chicken wings.
We ordered 10 between us and were stunned at the mountain of wings that arrived at our table. They were huge, tender, served in a buffalo sauce and complemented with a blue cheese dip. A bit messy but utterly delicious.
Atmosphere
We dined before a gig so it was very busy but that also made for a great atmosphere. The décor is fun and there’s a nice, laid-back vibe.
Price
At about £13 for mains and £12 or 10 wings it’s a little pricey but the generous portions make up for it.
P.S. On Wings Wednesdays enjoy as many wings as you can eat in 90 minutes for £18.50…if you dare. We barely managed 10 between us!
