A streaker with a difference disrupted play during the Miami Open yesterday.
A mischievous iguana settled itself on the tournament scoreboard during a match between Tommy Haas and Jiri Vesely.
After event staff tried and failed to remove the lizard successfully, the umpire told the players: “If it’s not moving and it’s just like that, we’re going to try and play.”
Vesely complained that it was causing him to lose concentration, and eventually the curious creature showed impressive on-court agility as it made an escape attempt.
Veteran star Haas, who took the opportunity to grab a selfie with the special guest, said after the match: “Maybe the iguana got the note that this is most likely the last time I’m playing here, and he wanted to say ‘Hi’ and take a peek or something.
“I don’t know where he came from and why he wanted to come out on Court One and say hello to everyone.
“I don’t think it’ll ever happen again, to be honest, especially in my career, because it’s almost over anyway. It’s nice for him to stop by. Good-looking iguana.”
When animals invade…
The iguana’s not the first animal to disrupt a sporting event. Here are some memorable moments…
Fans protesting against Blackburn Rovers owners Venky’s, an Indian company that specialises in chicken meat processing, sent on a special pitch invader.
And it didn’t happen just once.
Scots golfer Colin Montgomerie once had his ball stolen by a thieving seagull in the final round of the 2015 Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach, California.
It took a good few minutes to remove the ‘Anfield Cat’ from the pitch during a Liverpool v Spurs game in 2012.
One of the highlights of the 2014 World Cup was a huge grasshopper landing on Colombia’s James Rodriguez.
This huge alligator proved to be quite a hazard for Florida golfers.
