Thailand
Coach: NUENGRUETHAI SATHONGWIEN
In her first spell in charge of her national team, she guided them to the 2015 World Cup – their first ever – before leaving. Sathongwien returned to the Thai camp in 2017, in time to plot their course to France via the semi-finals of the Asian Cup.
Star player: KANJANA SUNGNGOEN
The experienced striker has bagged 30 goals in 47 appearances for her country, including crucial strikes in two successful World Cup qualifying campaigns. Her pace, strength and savvy will make her a key weapon in Thailand’s arsenal this summer.
Chile
Coach: JOSE LETELIER
A Copa Libertadores winner as a player, Letelier took charge of old side Colo-Colo’s women’s team in 2010. He guided them to 10 straight domestic trophies, and a Copa Libertadores Feminina before securing the national team job in 2015.
Star player: CHRISTIANE ENDLER
Chile should be grateful to have Endler between the sticks. At 5ft 11in, she commands her box like few other keepers in the women’s game and has lighting-quick reflexes to boot. Currently starring for Paris Saint-Germain, she will be right at home in France this summer.
Sweden
Coach: PETER GERHARDSSON
A former assistant manager at Swedish sides Enkoping and Helsingborg, and head coach of Gothenburg side BK Hacken, Gerhardsson took over the national women’s team in 2017. He will be expected to steer his country of perennial qualifiers to the latter stages.
Star player: STINA BLACKSTENIUS
Handed her chance to shine in qualifying for France owing to the retiral of Lotta Schelin and Caroline Seger’s injury problems, Blackstenius grabbed it. The nippy, powerful striker scored three times in seven appearances to help her country to France.
USA
Coach: JILL ELLIS
The United States boss has already masterminded one World Cup win for her country, in 2015, and another could well be on the cards. Ellis’ side cruised through qualifying, beating Mexico, Panama, Trinidad & Tobago, Jamaica and Canada without conceding a single goal. They are rightly considered favourites in France.
Star player: JULIE ERTZ
As a defensive midfielder, Ertz doesn’t occupy one of the game’s glamour positions, but she is central to everything the USA do. Her toughness and vision allow her to boss games, usually from start to finish. Stopping her will be key for her opponents.
