FORMER Celtic footballer Marc Crosas faces an animal cruelty investigation after spearing an endangered baby shark.
The 28-year-old was pictured brandishing a slalom pole with an angelshark harpooned on the end.
Both the player and his latest club, Tenerife, have apologised following the incident, which happened during a beach training session.
But despite this, the deputy mayor of Santa Cruz, the town on the Canary Island where the incident happened, has promised “disciplinary proceedings”.
Spaniard Crosas, who played 51 times for the Hoops, wrote on Twitter: “I regret the damage caused by the unfortunate incident on Friday on the beach of Teresitas. I apologise for the mistake. I accept the consequences and will try to do everything in my power to compensate for the issues caused.”
Crosas recently joined the Spanish second-tier side on loan from Mexican club Cruz Azul.
In a statement, the club said: “We apologise for the unfortunate incident on the beach of Las Teresitas and regret the damage caused.”
However, the apologies did little to satisfy deputy mayor Zaida Gonzalez.
She said: “Terrible news. They just killed a baby angelshark, whose population is severely depleted.
“Teresitas is one of the few breeding sites for them. The apologies for this atrocious action are not enough.
“The environmental department will open disciplinary proceedings.”
