This tray of gloopy food is typical of some of the worst fare served to care home residents.
It shows a plate filled with pureed and mashed dishes that look identical aside from their varying colours.
The snap was taken by a disgruntled care home visitor and posted on the Twitter social media site. The person who took it said it was typical of the slop served up in the home, which The Sunday Post has chosen not to name.Support our Care Home campaignWe showed a picture of the meal to nutritionist Carina Norris who branded it thoroughly “unappetising”. She said it highlighted the importance of making food appealing to encourage the frail and elderly to eat.
She said: “Good nutrition is vital for elderly people. Getting enough of the nutrients needed to support the immune system can make the difference between managing to shake off a minor infection and it developing into something much more serious.
“Also, food needs to look appetising. The most expensive, nutritionally tailored meal in the world isn’t going to do a bit of good if the person doesn’t want to eat it!
“I don’t think the meal looks attractive personally I wouldn’t want to eat it if I wasn’t really hungry.
“And unfortunately, many elderly people don’t have good appetites, so they don’t feel hungry even when their bodies desperately need good food. They need coaxing and tempting.”
Judy Downey, chairwoman of the care home Relatives and Residents Association, also criticised the meal.
“It looks revolting,” she said. “Sadly, I’ve visited people who were served food that was wholly unrecognisable.”
