Derek Ferguson is the main suspect in the 2007 killing of barman Thomas Cameron.
Detectives from Police Scotland’s Fugitive Unit also want to speak to the 50-year-old about the death of William Bates, whose body was found stuffed in an oil drum and dumped in the River Clyde.
It has now emerged several European police forces are involved in hunting Ferguson down.
Detective David Wilson, of the Fugitive Unit, insisted: “Ferguson remains the top priority. All efforts are being made to trace him and we are working closely with several foreign law enforcement partners to bring this long running inquiry to a conclusion.
“Our inquiries will continue chipping away at the leads that we have, at some point Ferguson will slip up. The people who are harbouring him will at some point run out of patience as they are risking their own liberty if they are caught supporting his lifestyle. However any relevant information from the public in relation to this case or any other persons wanted on warrant is always appreciated”
Ferguson was believed to have been hiding in the south of Spain and had been spotted in Marbella. However, it’s now thought he has moved on to northern Europe. He’s missing part of his left ear and has a number of distinguishing marks, including a tattoo of a heart, an arrow and a dagger on his left arm.
Officers are convinced Ferguson is in regular contact with associates back in Glasgow, who have been helping fund his lifestyle. His mugshot, has been circulated round European airports as part Operation Captura, which aims to round up criminals who have gone on the run.
It was started in 2006 and identified 50 dangerous Britons hiding in the Costa del Sol. The multi-agency effort hopes to convinced the ex-pat community to help track down the crooks.
Ferguson is thought to use the alias William Murdoch Henderson.
Earlier this week William Paterson, linked by cops to the death of gangland enforcer Kevin ‘Gerbil’ Carroll four years ago surrendered to police in Madrid. He was then arrested on a European warrant and appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Friday.
Prosecutors claim the 34-year-old killed Carroll in a hail of bullets four years ago. It’s also alleged he had a Ruger .357 Magnum handgun and a 9mm self-loading pistol. He is said to have hidden two fire arms behind Coatbridge Library in Lanarkshire.
Carroll, 29, was shot dead outside an Asda supermarket in the Robroyston area of Glasgow in 2010. At the cities Sheriff Court, Paterson was also alleged to have stolen a car and tired to defeat the ends of justice by setting a motor on fire.
He made no plea or declaration and before being remanded in custody.
