Police are probing the mosque where a Scottish jihadi fighter worshipped.
Abdul Raqib Amin, 24, who went to school in Aberdeen, last week appeared in a recruitment video for the hardline Islamic militant group Isis.
The online video encourages young Muslims living in Britain to join a Holy war in Syria.
Police Scotland are investigating the video and Chief Constable Sir Stephen House has revealed officers are also working with members of the Aberdeen Mosque and Islamic Centre in an attempt to track Amin’s path to extremism.
Detective Chief Superintendent John Cuddihy, of Police Scotland’s Organised Crime and Counter Terrorism unit, have confirmed that a high-level probe was under way.
He said: “Inquiries are ongoing into establishing the details and circumstances of an individual who featured in a video broadcast in relation to encouraging others to become involved in the conflict in Syria. We are working closely and very positively with the local community in Aberdeen.”
Police insiders have suggested officers will be keen to rule out the mosque as a recruitment platform.
One officer told The Sunday Post: “The question is did he become radicalised here and, if so, by whom and where.”
Amin, who attended St Machar Academy, was identified after appearing in the Isis recruitment video.
It has since emerged the Home Office has commissioned a film based on interviews with relatives of Britons killed fighting in Syria as part of its efforts to dissuade young Muslims from joining jihadist groups. The video will be shown in schools and mosques.
