The Conservatives have warned the SNP will try to end the council house “right to buy” policy if the nationalists have a hand in government at Westminster.
Speaking on Radio Scotland, former First Minister Alex Salmond said he’d like to see “council houses with the right to buy gone”.
The SNP have already abolished right to buy, which was a flagship policy of Margaret Thatcher’s Tory administrations, in Scotland in an effort to maintain the housing stock available.
That move was supported by Labour in the Scottish Parliament.
Now the Tories are warning the two parties might try to do the same in England if they are in government together in Westminster after the General Election.
Housing Minister Brandon Lewis said: “SNP and Labour worked together to abolish right to buy in Scotland and now they want to get rid of it in England as well.
“While Conservatives actively support home ownership and aspiration, Labour and the SNP seem set to stop people fulfilling their dream of home ownership.”
