Mary Logie, 82, was found dead in the living-room of her flat in the Green Gates area of Leven, Fife, at about 8pm on January 5.
The pensioner was a regular churchgoer who had planned to visit a friend in hospital that day but did not turn up.
Police launched a major investigation into her death and arrested a woman on Wednesday.
Sandra Gaughan or Weir, 40, was charged with murder when she appeared in private at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court on Thursday.
Weir, of Leven, is understood to have been a neighbour of Mrs Logie.
She made no plea or declaration during the petition hearing and was remanded in custody, the Crown Office confirmed.
The case was continued for further examination and she is expected to return to court within eight days.
Mrs Logie, who had lived in the Leven area all her life, has been described as a “kind, friendly and outgoing” woman.
She recently spent Christmas with one of her sons in England and was said to have led an active life, with lots of friends.
