The former SNP leader and first minister will host an “honest, straight talking” show on LBC from Wednesday January 13, with station bosses pledging no subject will be off limits during the 30-minute slot.
Listeners will be able to call, text, email or tweet Mr Salmond, who is the SNP’s foreign affairs spokesman at Westminster, during the programme, which will be on air between 4pm and 4.30pm.
He said: “It is a great pleasure to be joining LBC for my first ever radio show. When I was first minister of Scotland, there were times when I had to bite my tongue. However, now unburdened from office, I can shoot straight from the hip.
“I am looking forward to discussing all of the issues and taking calls from every corner of these islands. It’s going to be honest, straight talking, with a bit of fun thrown in.”
Mr Salmond resigned as first minister and SNP leader after his party lost the 2014 Scottish independence referendum but has retained a high-profile role in politics, returning to the House of Commons as MP for Gordon in last year’s general election when his party, now led by Nicola Sturgeon, swept the board north of the border.
In a broadcast clip ahead of his first show, he revealed that a dark chocolate Bounty “is the bar for me” in response to a comment that “if Alex Salmond was chocolate he would be dark and bitter”. Mr Salmond also read out a tweet from another listener who quipped that the former first minister has “Fuzzy-Felt eyebrows”.
The Alex Salmond Phone-in is the latest in a series of political programmes for LBC, which became the first radio station where members of the public could question a senior member of government on a weekly basis when former deputy prime minister Nick Clegg had his Call Clegg show.
It currently hosts a monthly Ask Boris programme with Mayor of London Boris Johnson, as well as the fortnightly Phone Farage with Ukip leader Nigel Farage.
LBC managing editor James Rea said: “LBC is the only national radio station which puts its listeners firmly in the driving seat, giving them direct access to senior politicians and people in authority.
“Alex Salmond is one of the most outspoken and straight-talking politicians, with in-depth knowledge of Westminster and Scottish politics, and we look forward to him joining our powerful line-up this year.”
