Padded suit saved me from Scooby Doo-ing

A man avoided being badly beaten after his padded Scooby Doo outfit soaked up the blows.

Les Brown, 29, was on a night out dressed as the cartoon character when he was attacked.

Despite a nasty ruff-ing up in front of friends dressed as Robin Hood and Batman, he escaped serious injury because of the novelty suit’s ample stuffing.

“My Scooby Doo outfit protected me from getting hurt more,” he said. “She was punching me in the head.”

Les was attacked by a 40-year-old woman on March 16 in Whitby, North Yorkshire.

Fortunately he only decided to wear the padded suit at the last minute. He borrowed it from a pal after plans to get an outfit from a fancy dress shop fell through.

He added: “I’m glad I wore the Scooby Doo onesie. It had a biggish head, which I think probably cushioned the punches.”

The drama ended up before Scarborough Magistrates’ Court where Sharron Hutchinson was fined after admitting assault.

Hutchinson’s solicitor, Shaun Greenan, told the court it was “bizarre and significant” he had been wearing the onesie, which protected him.

“I just want her to stay away,” Les said after the hearing.

Last night a top A&E consultant said fancy dress costumes can make for “extremely absorbent protection”.

The Glasgow-based locum said:“My advice, however, would be for people to avoid being assaulted or getting into fights.”
