Britain’s big six energy companies have come under fire after it emerged that ALL of them are offering energy price freezes despite saying that Labour’s energy price freeze would bankrupt energy companies and lead to blackouts.
In one case, a supplier is offering customers £100 gift vouchers for high street shops such as Argos, Boots, Debenhams and Toys R Us if they freeze prices until November 2016.
That’s one month shy of the 20-month price freeze promised by Labour if they win the General Election in May.
SSE are offering the vouchers to entice customers to sign up to their freeze despite warning that Labour’s policy would lead to “unsustainable loss-making retail businesses”.
British Gas, who said controlling prices would not be “economically viable”, offer customers the chance to freeze prices to 2017 at a cheaper rate than their standard tariff.
Caroline Flint MP, Labour’s Shadow Energy and Climate Change Secretary, commented on the findings: “This proves once and for all that all the energy companies’ complaints were nothing more than scaremongering.
“If they can offer to freeze prices for some customers, there’s nothing to stop them freezing prices for all customers.
“That’s why the next Labour Government will make all energy companies freeze their prices until 2017.”
