“Margaret River is my very own Oz utopia”
“When I was a kid we always enjoyed caravan holidays, predominantly in Devon and Cornwall.
My parents had an old Peugeot which had three rows of seats and there were three generations of us and the dog loaded up in this thing.
The caravan parks always had entertainment and my nan won the glamorous granny competition one year.
I’ve got a place in Italy now but I think my favourite destination of all time is the Margaret River region of Australia.
I was filming A Place In The Sun which fortunately Sean was working on too and took three days out to explore.
It’s a few hours south of Perth and is just the most glorious place a vast expanse of ocean and vineyards.
You can lie on the beach and drink wine all day. It’s like Utopia. I’m a huge believer in places that have a soul, much like houses.
Sometimes you go into a house and you can’t wait to get out or you really love them.
I have an affinity with places too and Margaret River has it. There’s something spiritual about it.
We stayed at a place called the Moondance Lodge, run by an English couple. The hotels all seem very earthy and in tune with nature.
There are these big red cliffs with rocks which tumble down to stunning sandy beaches.
You come across dirt tracks leading to vineyards, each with their own tasting rooms and wine you can’t get anywhere else. I’m already saving up for my real big holiday, when I turn 50.
That’s a bit over seven years away but I’ve already started a little savings account it’s pathetic, isn’t it?
I’m going to the Maldives with everybody and that’s going to be my real splash-out. Holidays have become massively important to us.
For a start you don’t switch off when you have two young children. But with Sean’s schedule and mine, we literally have a window of just 10 days over the summer when neither of us is working.
We’ve booked our holiday to a new place called Ikos Olivia in Greece. The dates are set in stone, we’re downing tools and that’s it.
Phones will be switched off, Wi-fi not checked and emails not looked at. It’s down time.”
