A 27-year-old German national who does not live in Bavaria was arrested by police following the incident.
A police spokesman said the man had “expressed political motivations” during the attack.
Four or five people were wounded in the attack, which took place at 5am local time at the Grafing Bahnhof station, nearly 20 miles east of Munich and near the end of one of the city’s commuter lines.
One person who was critically injured in the stabbing died later in hospital.

At least one platform at the station is expected to remain closed through to midday, and there are some delays to services, railway operator Deutsche Bahn said.
