Faye Tozer’s trip to the Maldives included watching turtles hatch, windsurfing and a very special proposal.
Faye Tozer is best known as part of pop group Steps, who sold more than 20 million records worldwide and had a run of 14 top 10 singles.
The band reunited in 2012 after a 10-year hiatus, but during the group’s break the 38-year-old became an established musical theatre star.
Her credits include lead roles in Tell Me On a Sunday, Me and My Girl and Tailor-Made Man. Faye is currently starring as Lisa Lamont in the stage version of Singin’ in the Rain.
Faye told The Sunday Post: “When I met my husband Michael, we decided our first holiday would be a trip to the Maldives. We still didn’t know each other all that well, so we thought it would be best to choose somewhere that had lots of things to do.
“We decided on Kuredu, which is an island resort and spa. It was beautiful and there was some serious sunshine. Michael doesn’t really enjoy sunbathing and would rather be doing something active.
“There were lots of water sports, so we went windsurfing and tried out a catamaran. It was my first time windsurfing. We also took a trip to a deserted island, which was great.
“There was also a wildlife area, where we happened to see turtles hatching. That’s an experience you don’t have very often!
“We met some nice people who we’ve ended up becoming really good friends with. There were some fabulous restaurants too.
“There was the main restaurant, where we had the same table every day. I think they were catering more for the Europeans, but there were a lot of specialised restaurants around as well. They had lots of fresh seafood, which I love.
“One evening we had a moonlit dinner on the beach and Michael asked me to marry him with a ring he had bought from the jeweller on the island.
“That was very special and I’m a lucky girl. We haven’t been back since. Our son Benjamin came along quite soon after and I think it’s more of an adult resort. Maybe in a few years we’ll go back.
“I’ve been lucky enough to travel all over the world with work and visited the most beautiful countries, but unfortunately there usually isn’t enough time to appreciate them.
“The Maldives was a very different holiday from what I’m used to. I don’t usually do the luxury, pampering-for-adults vacation. Ever since I was tiny, my parents, sister and I went on camping trips. In fact, it’s something I still do now.
“We have all the gear and I like getting a bit dirty and muddy. It’s always within the UK we go camping and I don’t think we appreciate what’s on our doorsteps.
“Of course, the weather isn’t always great, but it was last year and we took full advantage. My husband’s father is a caravanner, but that’s not something we’ve quite got into yet although we do go with him sometimes.”
Singin’ in the Rain is at The Festival Theatre in Edinburgh until March 15.
