From Blackpool to New York and India.
“I grew up about 25 minutes away from Blackpool Pleasure Beach and that meant that every single holiday was taken up with family flocking to our house. Honestly, it was like a B&B.
Everyone would descend on our house and, week after week, my mum would cook for the tons of people who turned up. But, being the little one, I would always go away with them on their day trips.
So I know Blackpool like the back of my hand and that was my childhood holiday haunt. I’ve seen everything and had more donkey rides than I ever needed!
My first proper holiday was to New York.
I love the theatre, so getting to see Broadway shows was such a thrill. And we went to a restaurant afterwards that some of the stars attended and started having a sing-song at the piano.
India is obviously the other place that has a massive place in my heart.
I’m Sikh, so it’s naturally special to me, but I’d recommend anyone travelling in Indian to go to the Golden Temple at Amritsar.
You can’t see it for ages, but then you come round this corner and suddenly, through this white marble archway, you seen this glistening gold palace.
Going there is a huge religious pilgrimage, but if you are travelling to India and you simply want to see something of absolute beauty, you can’t beat it. It’s better than the Taj Mahal.
Just last year I took my son abroad for the first time. We went with a friend and her daughter to a lovely little place on the southern tip of France called Collioure.
It’s a coastal town, well more of a village really, and it’s the perfect mix for families.
Initially, we were staying out at a Eurocamp a bit further away. It was fine for a few days but we got cabin fever and took a train down to Collioure and it was so gorgeous.
It was first mentioned in record books in the 7th Century. There’s a really old Victorian-era fairground looking out over the beach. It’s the place the French take their families.
Apparently, they have a big festival with fireworks in August and I want to go back then to see that.”
