TV channel STV Edinburgh broadcaster Ewen Cameron reveals his holiday highlights.

“For a family holiday, you just can’t beat Spain. We’ve been a few times to Salou because of the theme parks and the beach. But I’ve got three real favourite holiday spots for very different reasons.

“I love Dubai as it’s an amazing place of so many different cultures. It’s got fantastic hotels and beaches and so much going on that it doesn’t seem like real life.

“It’s easily one of the best places on the planet and I actually lived there for a wee while. It’s tax-free and there’s an amazing lifestyle. I still go back every year, but you do need to come back home to get a reality check.

“I’ve seen the unreality of the lifestyle go to the heads of quite a few of the ex-pats. The changes aren’t pleasant and Dubai can have that effect.

“It’s a family holiday when we go there now but my other two places are just for the wife and myself or with our friends.

“The first is Las Vegas which, in the Strip, has the best streets in the world and is just like an adult Disneyland. It caters for all tastes, whether you want to gamble or just see a show.

“I’ve been twice and I plan to go back in the not-too-distant future. When Teresa and I go we have a ball, spend a wee bit of money on a few tables at the casino while having a few free drinks.

“The shows at the big hotels are just outstanding. We saw Rod Stewart perform and he was amazing, partly because of the location I think.

“My final place is Amsterdam, which I like for long weekends and think is one of the most fascinating places in Europe.

“It’s a great place to people-watch, whether it be Dam Square, the restaurants and pubs or the Red Light district.

“I find that fascinating not in that sense, but because it doesn’t come across as sleazy. You’ve got nice coffee shops and wee supermarkets and everything just seems to fit in.

“Everyone gets on with their daily business and they seem so relaxed and friendly.”
