The rise and rise of volunteering holidays

Volunteering holidays are becoming more and more popular.

Never volunteer is the wise advice many workers have learned to follow but doing the opposite is now an increasingly popular option when not at work.

Volunteering holidays are booming with those looking to do a bit of good during their break. It’s something that can suit homebodies or those with a wanderlust, as well as families, couples or individuals.

The National Trust are among the most active in the UK and their years of experience have seen them hone the breaks and activities.

Specific options are available for families, independent travellers and teens, for example, as well as for just two to four nights for those who can’t spare a full week.

Prices start from just £40 for those arranging their own accommodation to £140 for those getting nice en-suite facilities.

The family breaks have fun activities like learning survival skills or going on scavenger hunts. The working holiday options themselves are hugely varied.

It can be anything from clearing plants or cleaning beaches to helping run an open day or festival to getting involved with archaeological digs.

You can also get involved with building walls or repairing footpaths. And traditional skills like hedge-laying can be taught by the experts.

The National Trust for Scotland also have a wide range of both working and conservation holidays. In fact, their Thistle Camp residential working holidays are so massively popular they are regularly booked out.

There are plenty options overseas with GVI being one of those with long experience as they’ve been around since 1997. They have over 150 different volunteering projects in 25 countries.

You can, for example, volunteer at an orphanage in Kenya which provides education to vulnerable children.

Animal lovers can help with the conservation and protection of endangered loggerhead turtles in Greece.

Or you could travel to Cape Town in South Africa to help with construction and renovation projects aimed at making life better for kids in nurseries and schools.
