“I really couldn’t care less who wins or who loses, nor it seems do millions of European voters.”
When the ballot papers arrived I grumbled “You’re having a laugh! The referendum’s not until September!”
Of course, on closer inspection I noticed they were for the forthcoming European Elections, gave it no more thought and duly dribbled coffee all over them.
And with less than a fortnight to go before polling day my interest in this election has waned to the point of apathetic indifference.
I really couldn’t care less who wins or who loses, nor it seems do millions of European voters.
Strasburg and Brussels could be on the other side of the moon given the political gulf that exists between their unaccountable MEPs and their very disillusioned and disaffected electorate.
If I thought for a second my vote would change anything for the better I’d be first in line to cast my vote on Election Day. But it won’t. Nothing will change.
The freeloading and expenses fiddling will continue, the European Parliament will grant itself yet more powers and pass more ridiculous laws and the big machine will become even bigger, further isolating the very people they purport to support.
The once utopian Common Market will become less common, less free and clogged with over the top border security as fears over immigration, unemployment, terrorism and ultra right and left radicalism increase to the point of paranoia.
But here in Scotland there is another other point I would like to make about this election, one that has been niggling away since the ballot papers plopped through my door and one l don’t know if we should be grateful for or concerned about…
It is this where is all the electioneering guff, placards, leaflets and adverts that we come to expect from all our main political parties?
Where’s the hard sell? What are their policies? Why aren’t they campaigning harder?
Do they know something we don’t or is it that they don’t really give a damn either and are waiting till after the Referendum before they even think about Europe.
If that is the case then we are definitely being short changed. They are treating us with contempt through their lack of action.
If they can’t be bothered to explain their policies on Europe then it’s no wonder so many of us can’t be bothered to vote.
A huge cacophony of noise has been made over Scotland’s eligibility to join the European Parliament in the event of a Yes vote. I would ask why we’d want to?
Down south the arrival of UKIP has encouraged furious debate between all the main parties and that in itself has captured the interest of the electorate. But here? Nothing.
And yet if there is a no vote in our Referendum the confusion and inequality that will exist if we are forced out of Europe after the promised UK European Election will be massive.
There is also the Eurozone crisis, immigration, the single currency and a host of other serious subjects that could and should be discussed and put before the voter before polling day. But they aren’t, they are being ignored or played down and that concerns me. And it should concern you as well.
I will, despite all I’ve said, probably end up traipsing down to the polling station on May 22 to dejectedly cast my vote. Why? I wish I knew!
