LA’s royal coverage has been fit for a king.
Hollywood went a bit monarchy mad last week with the birth of Prince George of Cambridge.
Normal broadcasts were interrupted with Royal Specials, complete with regal-sounding music.
Channel after channel wheeled out legions of talking heads who analysed and pondered the new baby for hours. And then days. They’re still talking about it now.
The moment the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge emerged from the hospital doors and descended the steps with Prince George was subject to the kind of slow-motion replays normally reserved for American Football coverage.
“Look,” one news anchor solemnly said. “Is that the baby’s first wave? Yes, I think it is. Let’s see that again.”
Some networks got a bit too carried away. They loved showing the footage of town crier Tony Appleton, who announced the birth of Prince George.
CNN and MSNBC both wrongly said that Tony, replete in traditional dress and brandishing a bell, was the official spokesman for Buckingham Palace.
They later had to issue some red-faced apologies.
I nearly forgot to mention I’m practically friends with the Duke and Duchess. Well, sort of.
My pal Amanda Holden had the same midwife as Kate Middleton. Which sort of makes me friends with the Royal Family? If I’m honest I’m not sure that’s enough to get me invited to the christening . . .
Johnny Depp took time out from watching his duff new movie The Lone Ranger to offer a bit of advice to William.
“I would say the same thing to any dad,” he explained.
“First of all it’s the greatest thing you’ll ever experience without question, the greatest ride ever.
“And the best thing you can do is just love them and be there.”
Bruce Willis was in the UK during last week’s Royal-mania to promote his movie Red 2.
Anyway, Bruce told the Royal couple to clear their busy schedules for the next 12 months.
“Stay home for the first year and don’t go anywhere,” said the Die Hard star. “Just play with that baby every day.”
“William and Kate will be very good at it. They seem like really cool people.”
I watched a video of Bruce being interviewed last week. It was a bit of a re-run of that One Show interview where he seemed a bit distracted.
I once had an interview with Bruce for five minutes. I asked him one question and he spoke non-stop for the full five minutes!
Old habits really do . . . ahem . . . Die Hard.
