It seems everyone who’s met him has a “Bill Murray Story”.
The comedy actor is a bit of an eccentric character.
Remember when he was in Scotland last year and ended up doing the dishes at a student party?
He’s known for approaching people while they’re eating dinner, stealing a chip and saying: “No one will believe you.”
I even read a story about him taking a taxi the driver was complaining his long hours meant he couldn’t practise the saxophone.
The star of Ghostbusters offered to drive the taxi while the hard-working driver got some rehearsal time in. I was a bit wary of meeting Bill, then.
But I needn’t have been worried when I got to chat with the Groundhog Day star about his role in comedy St Vincent.
I also spoke with the gorgeous Naomi Watts, and Irish star Chris O’Dowd too.
St Vincent is an offbeat Christmas comedy about a boy whose parents have just divorced but finds an unlikely mentor in a grumpy war veteran, played by Murray.
He was perfectly happy to talk to me with me alongside the movie’s child star, Jaeden Lieberher. I’d bet he’s not from Ayrshire with a name like that.
After that I got to sit down with Naomi Watts, who plays a pregnant Russian prostitute a bit of a departure for the woman who played Princess Diana last year.
“I’m not really the go-to girl for that,” laughed Naomi. “People think of me more as being in dark films.
“It felt like a great challenge I was terrified. Bill Murray is a comedic great and I haven’t proven myself. I haven’t done it on screen.
“If you do a long stretch of films where you star as a woman on the edge of a nervous breakdown then people think that’s all you are!”
Chris O’Dowd has comedy chops from The IT Crowd sitcom. As well as making the jump to Hollywood, he’s also going to be a dad with his partner, the presenter Dawn O’Porter, for the first time in a couple of months.
“How did that happen?” I innocently asked, much to the delight of Chris. Life really couldn’t be much better for him at the moment.
“I made a deal with the devil a couple of years ago,” joked Chris. “I’m aware of how things are going, Dawn and I have a lovely life.
“You live in fear that it’s all going to disappear. For a while I wanted to be a journalist, then a lawyer because I really liked the show LA Law. But then I realised it’s really boring!”
Looks like you made the right decision, Chris!
