It’s not every day you get to make eyes at one of the most famous women in the world.
But when I sat down with Jennifer Aniston last week, that’s exactly what I did.
As usual for these interviews, we were all pressed for time so I told everyone not to panic.
“How can I panic with those blue eyes? I feel very soothed,” purred Jennifer, who remained a vision of serenity, at me.
We were chatting about Life of Crime, just out in the UK. Jennifer plays a socialite who’s kidnapped by two bungling criminals in a crime caper which also stars Isla Fisher and Tim Robbins.
She’s good in it, and proves once again she’s a smashing talent if you look past the circus of celebrity that goes along with being one of the most famous women in the world.
“It’s fun to be like a chameleon,” she said. “I came from sketch comedy, where I was always playing different characters.
“There’s nothing like diving deep into a character. I love comedies, they fulfil me and I love making people laugh. But I also really enjoy going into these little gems of movies and being a part of them because it’s where you get creative.”
Her performance reminds me of the 2002 black comedy The Good Girl, a role which proved Jennifer really had a range.
Of course, she made her name playing Rachel in Friends. For a lot of actors that huge success might have become a millstone.
Not only is Jennifer comfortable with the legacy and hairstyles of Friends, she revels in it.
“I’m thrilled we managed to make something that’s lasted 20 years,” she explained. “It’s lovely it represents a time that was adorable. We were all so young. I can’t believe it’s 20 years ago. That’s really weird.
“I can still watch Friends. The good thing now is I’m not critiquing it. I’m not wondering why I said something a certain way. It’s just fun to watch.
The stardom Jennifer enjoyed thanks to the sitcom juggernaut hasn’t fazed her, either. She seems comfortable in her own skin, and with the seemingly endless attention from the paparazzi.
“I’m sure everyone who deals with some sort of lack of anonymity wishes they could go back to a time when they could just do anything they wanted,” she said. “But then you think you wouldn’t get to do what you wanted to do.
“I love what I do, I’ve created a world where it’s all manageable. “If you can find yourself at the location without getting found although if some jerk on a cell phone decides to phone around then you can’t. Which happens!
“I don’t really do disguises. Because then you’d get people saying: ‘Look at Jennifer Aniston wearing a clown mask!’ Which is way worse.”
Crowds want to see Jennifer, which is why she’s still out front and centre to sell a film, like Life of Crime.
“Hopefully you’re seeing that person you want to see, just in a different role. It’s so fun, you’re shooting so fast because you don’t have a big budget. You barely have time to walk back to your trailer. But it doesn’t matter, everyone’s all in it together. It’s such a labour of love.”
Jennifer was always drop dead gorgeous but it seems she’s getting even more beautiful as time goes by.
I’m not above a bit of flattery, of course what a sook so I tell her. She took the compliment graciously.
“I think it all comes from finding joy in your life,” she added. “Beauty comes from within.”
A very gracious answer, but I thought I’d ask if there’s anything more practical she gets up to.
“There’s always stuff I do like running and yoga,” added Jennifer. “But I love to do spinning, elliptical, and strength training.
“I’ve started this darn versa-climber thing. That is literally a pain in the butt.”
I’m not sure what a versa-climber is, but it’s about to experience a huge boost in sales if it’s endorsed by Jennifer.
