STEWART HOSIE has announced that he is to step down as deputy leader of the SNP.
The Dundee East MP, who has been at the centre of an affair scandal, will not stand for re-election at the party’s autumn conference.
In a letter to Nicola Sturgeon he said: “I am writing to you firstly to apologise for any hurt and upset I have caused to friends, family and colleagues. That was never my intention.
“I am also writing to tell you of my intention not to seek re-election as Depute Leader of the SNP at this year’s annual conference, giving ample time for the Party to choose a successor.
“As you know I have been admitted to hospital on three occasions in the past few years with very high blood pressure. In that regard, the stress of the intense scrutiny of my private life has been very difficult.
“I intend to concentrate on my constituents, my responsibilities at Westminster, and most importantly, my health.”
We reported in this morning’s Sunday Post that Mr Hosie’s position was under threat after his affair with journalist Serena Cowdy was exposed.
Rivals were understood to be preparing to topple him from his post.
Mr Hosie announced he was separating from his wife of 20 years, Shona Robison, who is the Scottish Government’s health secretary and close ally of Miss Sturgeon, last Sunday.
Days later his affair was revealed and the episode has reportedly left Miss Sturgeon and the SNP hierarchy livid.
