The Hoops have been active in January, parading Erik Sviatchenko, their new £1.5 million capture from Danish club Midtjylland, ahead of yesterday’s win against St Johnstone.
With the possibility of the domestic treble still very much on, manager Ronny Deila has also looked to consolidate by hanging on to the players he already has.
Winger James Forrest has been offered a new four-year deal and the Norwegian has stated his determination to hold on to Stefan Johansen, a reported £5 million target for Aston Villa.
It had been thought that with the arrival of defender Sviatchenko, Celtic’s spending would be over.
But The Sunday Post understands they remain very much in the hunt for Elyounoussi, the Moroccan-born Norwegian internationalist who scored in both of Molde’s Europa League wins against the Hoops this season.
Just 21 years old and with a record of almost a goal every other game since joining Molde in 2014, he is valued in the region of £2 million by his club.
The Celtic coaching team were hugely impressed by his performances in the ties.
They are facing competition though with the Hoops one of several European clubs keen to try and lure him away from Norway.
Asked about the speculation earlier this month, Elyounoussi said he knew of the interest but was focussing simply on playing for Molde.
But Deila will hope the chance to play in front of a 50,000-plus crowds, the potential for Champions League football next season and to win trophies will prove too hard for his target to resist.
Should the deal get done there could be more movement as it would leave Nadir Ciftci looking surplus to requirements.
The Turk has struggled since his arrival from Dundee United, looking uncomfortable in the one up front system favoured by Deila.
He lacks the movement and finishing ability of Leigh Griffiths, the size and aerial ability of Carlton Cole and the versatility of Elyounoussi, who can play through the middle or on either wing.
Also possible, should Johansen end up going, is a loan move for Norwich midfielder Graham Dorrans.
While the 28-year-old Scottish international is featuring for the Canaries, mostly from the substitutes’ bench, the arrival at Carrow Road of his national teammate Steven Naismith from Everton is likely to restrict his top-team opportunities.
