England v Scotland: The memorable clashes at Wembley

Post Thumbnail

WEMBLEY.

It’s the one word in the English language guaranteed to stir the emotions of Scottish football fans like no other.

Sometimes it has meant joy, sometimes despair.

And on the occasions when Wembley has meant downright humiliation for our team, we have tried not to think about it for too long.

Scotland are back at Wembley this Friday, albeit it’s the modern, shiny, all-seated arena that replaced the Twin Towers as the new home of the Auld Enemy in 2007.

Who knows what emotions the World Cup qualifier will stir in the Tartan Army.

But the memories of the biennial pilgrimage to London remain.

A Tartan Armada which set sail in the fountains of Trafalgar Square, and steered its course to Wembley, sometimes to cruise on the crest of a wave, sometimes to come a cropper on the rocks of English superiority.

Baxter, Law, the Wembley Wizards, the crossbar being snapped, Frank Haffey picking the ball out of the Scotland net nine times.

We’ve picked out some of the high points, and a few of the low ones, from 75 years of playing England in their own back yard.

We’ve also looked back more recently, to 2013 when Gordon Strachan’s side lost a friendly in the revamped Wembley.

Enjoy.
