Neil Lennon has called for the re-introduction of the winter break throughout British football.
The Celtic boss had his view of the potential benefits reinforced by his team’s mini break to the Turkish Riviera over the past few days to take part in the Antalya Cup.
The Hoops were able to participate thanks to the SPFL’s decision to allow clubs the option of applying for up to two free weekends in the season.
Celtic, who back at the start of the campaign went to Dublin to play Liverpool in a friendly, postponed their scheduled home game against Kilmarnock this weekend in favour of a few days in the sun.
“The SPFL have shown a bit of leeway and we are grateful for it,” said Lennon. “Personally, I think a two-week winter break would be beneficial for the game both in Scotland and England.
“I am sure all the managers at the top level would agree with that, as the amount of matches we play is nothing short of is incredible.
“Allied to the Champions League and Europa League commitments, it takes its toll on the players, the squad and even the management at times!”
Critics would point out that Celtic opted to play MORE matches by going over to Turkey, with victory in Thursday’s challenge match against Trabzonspor earning them their place in this afternoon’s Final.
The Irishman, however, argues that doesn’t tell the whole story.
“This trip has been very worthwhile because sometimes it is good to change the scenery,” he said. “You are in almost every day, and you see the same faces and carry out the same routine.
“So, especially at this time of year, it’s nice to come away. It’s good for bringing players out of their shell, and it’s also good for injured players as it shortens their recovery time.
“So there are lot of benefits to be had from it. The weather is not fantastic, but it’s a change of climate. There’s a bit of sun in the morning for training and we are playing against really good opposition, which is great.
“The facilities are excellent, the training complex is top drawer and you can see from the way the players performed against Trabzonspor that they are enjoying it and are nice and relaxed.
“Obviously it will be judged on the reaction we have in our first game back against Motherwell next Saturday.
“But we’ve had a long think about it. The players will be back midweek and we will have four days to prepare.”
One of the players Lennon feels had benefitted most from the trip is Steven Mouyokolo.
The French defender, who was a free agent after being released by Wolves, has been out of action since suffering an Achilles tendon injury in training back in September.
He has made better than expected progress, however, and could be back in action soon.
“It’s great to have him over here,” said Lennon. “He’s back ahead of schedule. He’s a great lad and a very good pro, who has had a really awful time with injuries. This one couldn’t have come at a worse time for Steven because he was doing very well.
“But we’re hoping he is back fit for next month.”
Also on the mend is Beram Kayal, who suffered a broken foot playing in the Champions League against AC Milan in November.
