She may now earn £67,000 each year from representing thousands of Scots at Westminster but Mhairi Black has revealed she still buys dinner from McDonald’s and “smart clothes” from Asda.
The 20-year-old SNP MP headed to London after defeating Labour’s Douglas Alexander at last month’s General Election.
However, she’s says she’s still doing the same things as any other woman of her age and that includes arguing with her mum about clothes.
She said: “It’s not very hard to resist pressure to dress differently because I’ve been resisting my mum for the last 20 years.
“She’s been trying since I was about two but we settled on going to Asda for some smart clothes. You need to be yourself and wear what you’re comfortable in.”
She also revealed how she was adjusting to her MP’s salary, laughing: “All my pals are like, ‘right, this round’s on you’. It’s crazy.”
One thing she has been spending money on has been food from McDonald’s after late nights at the House of Commons.
She said: “You’re at your work till 8 or 9 at night, then, when you leave, you grab a McDonald’s and go back to the hotel.”
The MP has one final exam to sit to complete her politics degree at the University of Glasgow and said it was “bizarre” meeting up with her fellow students again. She is now looking forward to graduating at the end of the month.
