Former Aberdeen star Jack Grimmer is now getting games for Port Vale.
Jack Grimmer is one example of a football transfer that went wrong.
Indeed, he could be forgiven for ducking tough questions. After all, since leaving Aberdeen for Fulham in January, 2012, things haven’t exactly gone to plan.
Aged just 17, he was publicly chided for jumping ship too soon, but he didn’t listen.
Two years later and without a single Fulham first-team appearance to his name he was farmed out on loan to League One Port Vale.
But to his credit, Grimmer doesn’t shy away from the fact things haven’t worked out.
“I’ve missed first-team football,” he says, “but thankfully Mickey Adams at Port Vale has given me the chance to get back to that.
“I took it as it came when I was still at Fulham. You still give everything for them in games, even though it’s not for the first team. But there is a bit of relief that I’m finally playing first-team football again.
“It came to the stage where I wanted to go out on loan. I’ve missed it and I can’t hide from that. But I definitely see it as a platform to go back to Fulham.
“Fulham is the club I left Aberdeen for, and is the team I want to play for.
“I want back there to prove myself, whoever the manager is, and I’ve got another 12-18 months to do it.”
While Grimmer has struggled to break through at Craven Cottage, Aberdeen have gone from strength to strength under Derek McInnes.
That’s another fact the former Don admits he can’t hide from.
“They’re flying at the minute,” he says.
“I grew up in Aberdeen, supported the club and had a season ticket before I joined them. So I always look for their result.
“I looked at trying to get up for the League Cup final, but I can’t because I’ve got matches now.”
