Floyd Mayweather Junior v Manny Pacquiao: Amir Khan can’t wait for the fight of the century

Khan can’t wait for fight of the century.

The entire boxing world will descend on Las Vegas on Saturday for the most eagerly anticipated fight in a generation.

Finally, after years of avoiding each other, the two biggest names in the sport, Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao, will meet in the ring.

And one man with more interest than most will be Amir Khan.

The Bolton boxer will take a break from his training camp in San Francisco where he is preparing for a fight against American Chris Algieri in New York on May 30 to head to Nevada.

As a boxing fan, Khan knows this is not one to miss. And he still has ambitions that if everything goes to plan in his own career, he could still get a shot at either Mayweather or Pacquiao at some stage.

But he is refusing to throw down a challenge to whoever wins in Las Vegas.

“I have so much respect for both men,” says Khan. “I don’t want to call out a winner before the fight has even happened.

“That’s not because I’m afraid. It’s because I don’t want to come across as cheeky or arrogant.

“This fight is great for boxing. It has to be near the top of the all-time lists of fights, and it might be the biggest since the Rumble in the Jungle.”

While Khan is trying to be respectful to both boxers, he finds it hard to look beyond Mayweather extending his unbeaten record to 48 and 0.

And Khan also questions whether Pacquiao’s 17 extra fights are starting to take a toll on the Filipino.

“I favour Mayweather because he’s never been beaten,” he states.

“Floyd is a boxer and Manny is a fighter and in those circumstances, I always favour the boxer.

“And we know Floyd can deal with a southpaw because he’s done it before.

“The first four or five rounds will be competitive, then Floyd will take the lead.

“He’s so good at winning rounds and creating that distance on the scorecards, so he’ll ease away to score a unanimous decision, even if it’s hard to see him stopping Manny.

“Four or five years ago, Manny was beating everyone but we’ve seen a bit of a decline in him since then.

“Everyone wants to believe that Manny Pacquiao can win. But the fans know in the back of their minds that Floyd Mayweather will do it.”
