I’m getting plenty of criticism saying this, but I believe Malky Mackay has the right to work in football again.
Not for a minute am I attempting to justify the offensive text messages that were sent during his time as Cardiff City manager.
I’ve said many times that there’s no place for racism or homophobia in football or wider society. But I’m not really sure what people want Mackay to do.
He has apologised unreservedly for his conduct and taken lessons on diversity and equality. Knowing him as I do, I’m convinced that he deeply regrets that period of his life and is not a bigot.
He deserves the chance to rebuild his life in football.
Unfortunately, his chairman hasn’t helped the situation. Dave Whelan made some comments that have added fuel to the fire.
I don’t believe for a second that his appointment of Mackay is a sign that he agrees with some of the language used in the text messages. We have to understand that Dave comes from an era where some comments that are now unacceptable were commonplace.
It’s an age thing. We all have to move with the times.
It would be very sad if a decent man like Dave Whelan was forced out of football.
