There’s a time and a place for everything. And Tuesday’s match against England will not be the moment for experimentation.
It may not be a qualifier but, as the world’s oldest fixture, it will be competitive and no friendly.
Last year’s renewal at Wembley was a timely reminder what a fantastic occasion this game can provide. Scotland’s spirited performance in defeat there played its part in the country’s resurgence under Gordon Strachan.
And having gone so far down the line, it is vital we continue to maintain momentum for the challenges to be faced in 2015 and beyond.
For that reason, the national coach must send out the team he believes has the very best of chance of beating the English.
A paying public, which has shelled out large sums of money to come and support the side just four days after the Euro 2016 qualifier against the Republic of Ireland, deserves nothing less.
