The former manager has been the saviour of Rangers on countless occasions.
And it wouldn’t surprise me if he was to emerge as THE key figure in the club’s near future.
Now a non-executive director following years of great success as manager, he has called for answers from Charles Green following a turbulent few days at Ibrox.
I believe that what Rangers need most now is a period of stability.
Despite the recent insinuations involving Craig Whyte, and yesterday’s announcement that the club will now look into the allegations aimed at Green, the Yorkshireman might still be able to deliver that.
If he cannot, then a consortium headed by Walter would surely be the answer?
Several prominent Scottish businessmen were happy to put cash up to back his plans for a rescue bid when the club went into administration.
It didn’t happen then but that does not mean they have vanished off the face of the earth.
Were Green to look to leave the club, I am sure there would be plenty of would-be buyers.
Rangers are, after all, in a much more secure position than they were a year ago with the issues with the ‘Big Tax Case’ and EBTs resolved.
The Third Division title has been won following a campaign in which the supporters have demonstrated their loyalty on numerous occasions.
Critics will argue the crowd of around 8,000 for the friendly against Linfield at Ibrox last Wednesday night is evidence of waning interest.
I have to admit it surprised me a little.
It was Linfield, after all, who made such a big fund-raising effort for Rangers with the game in Northern Ireland at a time when cash was really at a premium.
What I believe happened is that, with the title secured and with the financial situation relatively secure, fans gave themselves a free pass for the week.
A free pass which might well have included taking in the Champions League games involving Juventus, Bayern Munich and Barcelona on television.
The important thing is that the Ibrox club’s position is healthy, and could be even healthier following the results of this week’s votes on League reconstruction.
SPL2 still can’t be ruled out in the event of a ‘No’ vote, and Rangers would surely be one of the teams invited to step up.
Should Charles Green’s position at Ibrox become untenable and he’s forced to move on, I think there would be a lot of interest from supporters in the business community to buy him out.
Walter Smith would be the perfect man to front a consortium.
No-one can ever question his Rangers credentials in the way that has happened with Green.
