Virginia Wade is unimpressed about the appointment of Amelie Mauresmo as Andy Murray’s coach.
But I think she was only putting into words the thoughts of many people in the game.
Personally, I think it is a very interesting partnership, But I know there are many people with doubts.
Virginia cited that she believed Mauresmo was ‘mentally fragile’ and that she couldn’t work out the appointment.
But the French girl won Wimbledon, and I take the view that a champion is a champion. The most important aspect is mutual respect between player and coach.
Of course, Virginia has been in this situation before. A year or two ago she upset Andy by describing him as a ‘drama queen’.
I did talk to her after that, and Virginia told me she’d not meant the remark as it had been interpreted.
What she was talking about were the on-court outbursts that Murray was prone to that were damaging his performance.
I’d been saying similar things for years. It was only after Ivan Lendl joined the Murray camp that Andy reined back on his tantrums, and that helped him to finally win Grand Slam titles.
Virginia always had the courage of her convictions. It helped her to win the Wimbledon title. I’m not sure she’s right about the Murray/Mauresmo partnership but she has every right to her opinion.
